A Conversation With ... Tony and Donna Gill, Owners, Gill Tech Services, Midlothian, TX

Dark web. Phishing. Data breach. Malware. Ransomware. Hacker. Zombie.

These are just a few of the words that strike fear in the hearts of almost anyone who has done anything online. And then there are technical setbacks like frozen screens, hard drive failures, error messages, strange noises, blank screens, slow processing … the list goes on and on.

These are the challenges that Tony Gill tackles every day at Gill Tech Services.

While wife Donna manages the office, Tony assists customers with servers and workstations, process procedures, internet providers, firewall protection, software and hardware solutions, and so much more. And in everything Tony and Donna do, cybersecurity is always a driving force.

After a career in the U.S. Air Force, Tony transitioned into the world of hardware, software, and customer service in 1994. Since that time, he has steadily enhanced his high-tech expertise through upper-level posts at KPMG and IBM. Additionally, with Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) and Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI) qualifications, Tony is well versed in finding and fixing security vulnerabilities.

In January 2017, Tony and Donna established Gill Tech Services, and in June 2018, they transitioned from their home office to retail space in the heart of Midlothian’s business community.

The Gills are passionate about educating small and medium-sized businesses on technology solutions. They say that many businesses believe “small” equates to “safe,” but unfortunately, even an independent operator can fall victim to malicious cyberattacks which can quickly translate into lost business and falling revenues.

As a managed service provider, Tony strives to be a technology partner with Gill Tech clients to ensure that their technology products, processes, and systems align with their business needs. He also helps clients create a business continuity plan to ensure that it’s business as usual, even in the face of technological curve balls.

As the only company in Midlothian to offer the range of services they do, Tony and Donna believe that they are in the right place at the right time, given the tremendous growth that Midlothian is experiencing. With four employees and plans to grow, the couple envisions supporting new and existing businesses with their technology and security needs, while also educating the community on cybersecurity risks and technology tools.

Tony says that, ultimately, Gill Tech’s mission revolves around one question: “How can we make your business work for you?”

Midlothian Economic Development: Tell us a little background about Gill Tech Services

Gill Tech Services: Gill Tech Services is a local, family-owned business providing computer technical support for organizations, churches, businesses, and individuals in Midlothian and surrounding areas.

Gill Tech Services has four main goals: 1) to offer professional business resources for planning and using tech 2) to provide continual support to our clients 3) securing client data 4) provide training on technology and security. The technical needs of every business are unique. We are a business development resource that strives to assist businesses with day-to-day technical needs, as well as planning for the future.

Beyond technical support, we also focus on identifying and securing computers and networks against cyber-criminals. Using technology exposes everyone to malicious or accidental loss of critical information. We provide solutions to minimize this exposure.

We each have a background in technology and training and our services include professional-level training sessions focusing on both personal and business technology educational needs.

MED: Why did you choose to open your business in Midlothian?

GT: Midlothian has been our home since 2004, so it was a natural choice to open a business near our home to provide technical services to our own community. We’ve met so many people who needed sound technology advice and assistance with day-to-day issues, that we decided in late 2016 to start a business here in Midlothian to provide the community a resource for its technical needs.

The Midlothian area has experienced rapid growth and has had to reach outside the community for technology support. We wanted to provide Midlothian with high-level computer and network services to meet the needs of our growing community.

MED: What kind of growth trends are you seeing in the computer services/IT industry, especially in relation to security software? 

GT: This is a big topic. Today’s businesses need continual technical advice and support to stay competitive – and safe. Modern computer systems, complex software, cyberthreats, government security regulations, cloud services, etc., make it necessary for businesses to have a partner who understands both their business and their technology.

When it comes to software, cloud-based subscriptions have become the norm. Businesses are discovering the efficiencies and flexibility of using their apps on various devices, when they are in and out of the office. One-time software purchases are quickly becoming a thing of the past. 

Security is an issue across all business sectors. Business data is more valuable, is stored in more locations, and requires more protection than ever before. Many businesses and organizations are unaware that protecting their data is more than simply installing software to keep the bad guys out.  Instead, a layered approach is necessary for effective protection against data loss through technology and human error.

While larger businesses have entire IT staffs working to keep them safe, smaller businesses are increasingly becoming targets because they typically have minimal protections in place. This can result in dangerous vulnerabilities.

MED: How would you characterize your experience thus far in Midlothian?

GT: Since opening our business in Midlothian, we have discovered a close and welcoming business community, and have made many wonderful friends and associations.

MED: How would you describe the Midlothian community?

GT: Midlothian is growing, and new people are moving in every day. Amenities and opportunities are growing, as well, yet the community has retained its small-town charm.

MED: What does Midlothian's progressive growth rate mean for the local business community?

GT: There is a lot of growth in manufacturing and services sector, and these businesses will bring in revenue and employment opportunities. We anticipate tremendous growth in the local economy going forward. Businesses serving this community will find that the rapid growth will also produce more customers.

MED: What advice would you give to other companies considering locating in Midlothian?

GT: Opening our business was a breeze. The city inspectors were prompt, friendly, and easy to work with. The chamber of commerce has been great to work with and has been exceptionally helpful with finding opportunities to talk with other business owners.
