A Conversation With … Jared Thompson, CEO, InHome Genius, Midlothian, TX
Jared Thompson has always had an affinity for cutting-edge technology. After years of installing media and often being asked to fix computers, program remotes and hang TVs, Thompson’s interest in high-tech innovation led him to join the exciting smart home revolution. In 2013, he established InHome Genius in Midlothian, Texas, and in just four short years, Thompson has expanded from modest home office to bustling business with nine employees. He has even been featured twice on FYI Television Network’s popular “Tiny House Nation” series.
Thompson says his progression of skill sets through the years naturally aligned him with the smart home industry. He eventually discovered an underserved market in Midlothian and decided to make his mark – a decidedly progressive and transformative mark. These days, Thompson is settling into his new 2,500-square-foot office, showroom and warehouse space where he proudly shows off the “genius room” – where all the wiring magic happens. Thompson is always eager to discuss whole-house integration, lighting options, energy efficiency and strategic scheduling. Bringing a smart home to life through thoughtful planning, complete customization and intelligent programming is Thompson’s modus operandi. He constantly strives to change lives for the better … with the flip of a proverbial switch.

Midlothian Economic Development: Tell us a little background about starting up InHome Genius?
Jared Thompson: I have always had a passion for technology. My journey began with a background in media installation and then I moved on to work for Apple. Over the years, I saw a major need for in-home tech support. After almost five years of working for Apple, I felt led by God to start my own business, InHome Genius, in 2013. We started off providing in-home tech support to customers but as we grew, the vision changed to a smart home focus. I had a strong desire to innovate people’s lives with technology which couldn’t be achieved by merely resolving tech issues. Since the pricing for smart homes had become more economical, and reliability had increased, InHome Genius quickly started designing and installing smart homes.
The technology in vehicles have continually improved each year to enhance a driver’s experience while the technology in our homes have remained stagnate. Seeing the truth in this was what led me to identify our business' ultimate goal: to make smart homes the standard for the majority of houses in the DFW area within five to eight years of starting InHome Genius.
Since 2013, the business has grown from a single-man crew to nine employees working together to make our smart home design business a success.
MED: Why did you choose to locate your business in Midlothian?
JT: My wife, Tarrin, and I moved to Midlothian shortly after being married. We fell in love with the town – it wasn’t busting like Dallas or Ft. Worth; it wasn’t too small with nothing to do. It had great school pride, but most importantly, there was a true sense of community. We later moved closer to Tarrin’s family in South Lake but as the saying goes, “absence makes the heart grow fonder.” We both missed Midlothian and knew that eventually we would make it back “home.” About four years later, we bought a house in Midlothian. So, when it came time for me to start InHome Genius, there wasn’t a question in our minds about where the business should be based. We had just always had a mutual understanding that we were going to set up shop somewhere in Midlothian.
MED: How would you characterize your experience thus far in Midlothian?
JT: Our experience in Midlothian has been positive; not excluding all of the time, effort, money and energy. It took a while for customers and businesses to open up their doors to us since Midlothian is such a tight-knit community. However, once they did, the word quickly spread. Word of mouth has been the biggest contributor to the growth of InHome Genius.
MED: How would you describe the Midlothian community?
JT: So many people here love to support their local businesses which makes it even more rewarding that we chose to start our business here in Midlothian. Not only that, but the city of Midlothian is expanding rapidly. Our goal within the next three years is to make smart homes a standard – rather than the exception – for a majority of houses in the DFW area. The explosive residential growth in Midlothian and growth in North Texas, in general, just reconfirms why starting InHome Genius in our hometown was the best decision for us.
MED: What advice would you give to other companies considering locating in Midlothian?
JT: For any business that truly values its customers and wants to add value to their lives, Midlothian is a great place to accomplish those goals. The residents of this city pride themselves on supporting local businesses – and it’s contagious. Though Midlothian continues to grow, that small, hometown feel has been well preserved. We have yet to experience another city with this level of community-driven gatherings, events and support. There is no doubt that Midlothian residents are the driving force behind its greatness. As a business owner, we couldn’t ask for better clientele.
